When some people being to look for supplemental income, they may hear that it’s possible to make money by blogging. While it is true that many bloggers earn money, it’s important to note that it’s not overnight riches. You must work hard to create a blog that will earn money for you.

How to Make Money Blogging

1. Affiliate marketing
This is where many bloggers begin when wanting to make money. This involves advertising products and services on your blog using a special affiliate link assigned only to you. When sales are made through your special link, you receive a percentage as commission. There are hundreds of affiliate programs available online. Shareasale is one of my favorites.
2. Sponsored posts
Sometimes brands will contact you to write a post on your blog about their products, website, or company. This should be a paid advertisement, as they will be getting exposure from the post. These are typically known as sponsored posts, and the rates you charge for them should depend on your traffic (namely, page views).
3. Banner advertising
Do you often notice ads displayed in the sidebar of your favorite blogs? These are known as banner ads. You can make money blogging in this manner using a few different routes. You may have advertisers contact you directly to host their banner ad for a specified amount of time. You can set your rate for this and negotiate until both you and the advertiser are satisfied. I typically offer a discount if multiple months are purchased at once.
Another way you can benefit from banner ads is to sign up for an ad network, such as Glam or Burst. They will then feed ads to your site, and you get paid for their views. A third way to earn money is through affiliate marketing with banner ads. Many programs will supply you with ads you can place in your sidebar, meaning more commissions when someone clicks the ad and makes a purchase.
4. Offering services from your blog
Do you write well? Want to help brands (or other bloggers) with their social media management? Interested in hosting Twitter parties? All of these are services you can offer right from your blog. Set up a dedicated page in your menu bar to advertise your skills and experience. Be sure to provide contact information (or at minimum, link to your contact page).
5. Selling your knowledge
Many expert bloggers have taken to writing books or reports in order to sell the knowledge they have gained. They may offer these as ebooks from their site, or upload them to Amazon so customers can choose a physical book or one to read on the Kindle. Other bloggers offer paid courses or webinars to share their information.
